As part of the Erasmus + KA2 “MultiEd” project, Oleksandra Golovko, a project coordinator from the University of Tartu (Estonia), organized a series of webinars on “Sharing EU multilingual education policymaking practices in Ukraine” that took place on April 28 and May 03, 2023.
The webinar was held with the participation of the Minister of Education and Research of Estonia Christina Kallas, Marina Mruga, state expert of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and Iryna Zadorozhna, a vice-rector for scientific work and international cooperation of Ternopil Volodymyr Hnatiuk National Pedagogical University.
The first speaker, the Minister of Education and Science of Estonia Christina Kallas (PhD), analyzed the implementation of multilingual education in Estonia. State expert of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine Maryna Mruga focused on the challenges Ukraine faces with in the process of introducing multilingual education. The speaker also pointed out the importance of using English in life situations while mastering educational programs and the need for striving for trilingualism. Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor Iryna Zadorozhna highlighted the results of the language situation study in Ukrainian universities in 2020-2021, the experience of introducing new courses and updating the previous ones in partnership with European colleagues, the first results of newly developed electronic course “CLIL Methodology” on the “Moodle” platform for teachers and lecturers advanced training. She also outlined the directions of the Strategy of Multilingual Education of TNPU and the main provisions of the National Recommendations for the Development of Multilingual Higher Education in Ukraine.
The webinar contributed to the expansion of the participants’ theoretical knowledge base about methods and principles of multilingual education and the challenges faced by teachers in the process of learning educational material in a foreign language.
The interest in participation in webinars is confirmed by the number of participants – 780 educators who received certificates confirming advanced training from the University of Tartu. Webinar participants actively asked questions, as there was time for discussions after each presentation.
